Player to Watch: Marcel Dareus

The Bills and Chiefs are in the hunt for one of the coveted wild card spots in the AFC. These two teams met last year in the beginning of November. In that game the Chiefs capitalized on 3 turnovers to beat the Bills 17-13. In that game the Bills contained the Chiefs offense. They held them to 153 yards passing and 127 yards rushing. Smith didn’t throw a touchdown in that game and he was sacked a total of six times, hit three times and hurried a total of twelve times. The Bills defense line was in top form. The defensive line dominated the Chiefs. Specifically, Marcel Dareus aka Mr. Big stuff had 3 sacks, 1 QB hit and 3 QB hurries. Jerry Hughes had 2 sacks, 1 QB hurry and Mario pitched in with 1 sack, 5 QB hurries also.

This week the defense will have to put up a similar effort. This game will be a low scoring affair, and I think the defense will have to come up with some big plays at Arrowhead stadium in order to get out of there with a win. The Chiefs have given up 34 sacks through 11 weeks. Chiefs center Mitch Morse has given up the 3rd most sacks (3) at his position and 9 QB hurries. Right guard Laurent Duvarnay-Tardif has given up 4 QB sacks (tied for 3rd most at RG) and 13 QB hurries. Left guard Ben Grubbs has been ruled out this weekend so swingman Jeff Allen will once again start. The Chiefs’ offensive line as a whole will have to have a great game versus a talented Bills defense, but specifically the interior blockers must be able to contain Marcel Dareus. The Bills will have a considerable edge with their defensive line, hopefully Marcel Dareus can dominate the interior of the of the Chiefs offensive line.

Here are a few cut-ups of Marcel Dareus wreaking havoc in the Chiefs backfield in last years match-up.

Outcome: QB Pressure

11 personnel vs. Nickel cover 2 man.

Below: The defense rushes four defenders. The RB #34 chips Mario Williams. The RG and RT double Marcel, but as the tackle goes to block Mario, Dareus powers through. A WR comes open over the middle but Dareus grabs Smith. Smith breaks the tackle and runs up the middle. Man coverage left the middle of the field wide open.

Below: Defense is in cover 1 man. Dareus is lined up right over the center. On the snap safety Duke Williams rushes off the left edge. Dareus runs a game with RE Jerry Hughes. The pressure off of the left edge forces QB Smith towards Dareus. Smith sees Dareus and slides back into the pocket where Mario cleans up. Great pressure by the defense.

The defense rushes four defenders. LE Mario Williams and DT Marcel Dareus run a twist. DT Williams rushes A gap and RE Hughes speed rushes off the right edge. As Dareus occupies the RT, Mario loops around. The pocket collapses and Dareus closes in for the sack. The full sack was awarded to Marcel Dareus.

The Bills defense is in cover 1 man and Schwartz decides to blitz. RE Hughes is in a two point stance and speed rushes off the edge. DT Williams, DT Dareus and LDE Williams all slant to the offenses left. The safety Duke Williams blitzs off the right side of the offense where he is picked up by RB Charles. This defensive call put Dareus one on one with the RG. The guard couldn’t handle the speed or power of Marcel. Sack #2.

Play 6

4th quarter 5:58

3rd and 3

Outcome: QB sack

Below: The Bills are in a cover 2 scheme. DE Lawson contain rushes as does DE Mario Williams. DT Kyle Williams drops into coverage and Dareus doesn’t look to rush hard either because he is tripled teamed. LB Bradham blitzes and nails the RB Charles. The pressure forces Smith to his right where Mario almost sacks him. Smith evades the defender, trips and is touched down by Dareus for his final sack of the day.

The Bills defensive line owned the Chiefs offensive line last year. With injuries to DT Kyle Williams and DE Mario Williams the Bills may need to scheme some plays to get pressure on QB Alex Smith.  The Bills should be able to contain the Chiefs’ run game, putting them in some 2nd and 3rd and long situations. That’s is when Rex Ryan and company will need to attack the Chiefs offensive line. They have shown that they have had trouble protecting Smith this year and in last years match-up. Marcel Dareus will need to step up even more than last year. Last year he was double teamed almost every play. He will need to command those doubles to free up the pass rushers at DE even more so this year. The inside pressure will speed up Alex Smith’s internal clock and force him to take sacks, or even better to commit turnovers. Marcel leading the Bills to a win, will put them in the driver’s seat of that highly coveted wild card spot.
